Cozumel, Mexico - Outside the Resort

Sorry for the length of this post but it was a pretty long day...We decided to rent a Jeep and explore the island. We left the comfort of the resort and tour guides and went out on our own. We had a blast!!

First stop of the day was the first town settled on Cozumel...El Cedral. The only ruin left standing is a temple where the women would go to pray for a baby and then once pregnant would return to have the baby in the temple. While we were a little disappointed by the lack of ruins in this town...we did buy our souvenir from them.

And we got a picture with a giant iguana...

Second stop on the tour was Punta Sur, a nature park on the southern tip of the island.

We climbed to the top of Faro Celarain, the lighthouse at Punta Sur. Yes...I went to the top of the lighthouse (even with my fear of heights)!! The view was amazing.

"El Mirador"...where the Mayans would watch out for the pirates.

This beach is named "La Playa Mas Hermosa" or "The Most Beautiful Beach". They hung up some hammocks for us and sat for a few minutes before we were off again.

At the Punta Sur park there are lagoons and surprisingly they have CROCODILES! I never would have guessed that there would be crocodiles in Cozumel!

Around the island they have "beach clubs." We stopped at a restaurant at one of these places called Playa Bonita. The food was excellent and we were both very worried about stopping on the side of the road but at that point we soooooooooo hungry we didn't care.

Continuing on our tour of the island, we stopped at the San Gervasio ruins.

The Little Hands Structure is so named because of the handprints on the walls...

The Tall House Structure is one of the largest structures in San Gervasio. This may have been the sanctuary of the Goddess Ixchel.

The Murcielagos was believed to be the most important building because it was where the Overlord lived.

Justin(Overlord???) played "King of the World" on the Round House Structure...
